jorge balça
Over the past two decades, Dr Jorge Balça has developed a strong portfolio of work and a unique combination of skillsets – as a stage director (of theatre, opera, and hybrid forms); a teacher and workshop leader; a presentation skills, performance and creativity coach; and as a practice-based researcher.
Classically trained in Portugal as an actor and singer, he then studied directing at Middlesex University, including a period at the Russian Institute of Theatre Arts in Moscow. More recently he completed a PhD which involved a study of training methods for opera performers with a focus on body-centred creativity strategies.
With a love for site-specific projects and collaborative forms, and an equal flair for comedy and drama, his work is dramaturgically inventive, visually striking and physically engaged.
He has, in the past, taught at the Dutch National Opera Academy (Amsterdam and The Hague) and has been for three years the Artistic Director of Bloomsbury Opera. He currently teaches at Morley College, in London, and freelances internationally both as a teacher and as a stage director.
